Kameelah Janan Rasheed
(b. 1985, USA)
Kameelah Janan Rasheed is an artist, writer, and former public school social studies teacher. Through immersive text-based installations, large-scale public text pieces, publications, sound projects, and discursive programming, her work engages with both figurative and literal language to explore how we narrate the connections between the past, present, and future. Currently, she is an artist in residence at Smack Mellon and on faculty at the School of Visual Arts in New York.
Through a large-scale installation that integrates excerpts of archival text, found images, and objects, Upto Oneself explores the concept of racial progress in America, opening up a discursive space to examine the tensions between perceived and actual progress. While the context is unique to the USA, questions of national progression are familiar concerns for many nations, particularly Ukraine. Although this installation specifically explores American racial progress, it also contains pointers towards conceptual concerns with the temporal politics of liberation and the language we use to talk about time.
