The exhibition “PARKOMUNA. Place. Community. Phenomenon” is the result of the long-term work of the Research Platform team at PinchukArtCentre. The exhibition explores the activities of artists who were in one way or another connected with the squat “Parkomuna,” more precisely with the area near the then Paris Commune Street (now Mykhailivska Street), where artist squats and studios existed (1989 – 1994).

From a historical perspective, the exhibition raises questions about the significance of place for the formation of an artist community, about the interactions within the community and their connection with the external cultural environment. The exhibition will feature artworks, photographs, videos, and archival materials related to the creativity and lives of such artists as Oleksandr Hnylytskyi, Oleg Holosiy, Dmytro Kavsan, Oleksandr Klymenko, Yuriy Solomko, Valeriya Trubina, Vasyl Tsaholov and many others.

Moreover, with the opening of the exhibition “PARKOMUNA. Place. Community. Phenomenon” a powerful public program will be launched. The series of events aims to systematically highlight the results of the Research Platform’s work on the exhibition’s theme and explain the specifics of Parkomuna as a place, community, and phenomenon.

The public program will include lectures, meetings with artists, round tables, and discussions involving key figures of the Ukrainian art scene of the early 90s. We also plan several special events with special guests, whose names will be announced later. Additionally, our new film program “Life of Bohemia” will be connected with the everyday life of iconic artistic groups of the 20th century. Immediately after the opening, there will be a curatorial tour with the participation of Tetiana Kochubinska and Kseniia Malykh, during which the curators will introduce us to the exhibition, the presented works, and their authors. And on October 21, we will meet for an anthropological discussion Sex, Drugs, and Rock’n’Roll: Cultural Protest and Freedom of the 90s”.

Curators:
Tetiana Kochubinska, national curator of PinchukArtCentre and scientific consultant of the research department.
Kseniia Malykh, curator of the Closer art center and  co-founder of OK Projects.

Scientific consultant: Oleksandr Soloviov, curator, art historian.
